COMMUNIQUE – Central Accounts Registry (CAR)

By virtue of Section 52A of the Bank of Mauritius Act 2004 (BoM Act), the Bank of Mauritius (BoM) has been empowered to set up a Central Accounts Registry (CAR). The aim of maintaining this registry is to support the detection and investigation of serious financial crimes such as money laundering and terrorism financing.

 

The CAR is a centralized database designed to:

MauBank, as a Know Your Customer (KYC) institution, is required by the above-mentioned section of the law to furnish to the Bank of Mauritius, information it requires for the purpose of maintaining that registry, namely basic customer account information as follows:

Notwithstanding the above, customer account balances and transaction details remain strictly confidential, and are not required to be shared for the purpose of the registry.


The information provided by the bank to the Bank of Mauritius remains limited to account identifiers and ownership details, and is transmitted securely to the Bank of Mauritius, strictly for regulatory purposes as mandated by law.


The bank remains committed to safeguarding the confidential data of its customers with due compliance to the national efforts to ensure financial transparency and security.
